From royalty and ex-prime ministers to American starlets and folk from out of town, the Melbourne Cup always attracts a diverse crowd. This year the 100,000 plus punters who made the trip out to Flemington were as colourful as always.

While storm clouds loomed for most of the day, a few splatterings of rain were not enough to dampen the mood. Armed with umbrellas and ponchos, punters sipped champagne, placed their bets and hung to the rails as Green Moon thundered into first place.

We sent our photographer Tim Grey down to capture it all. From track side, to betting ring, up in the stands and down at the stables - Broadsheet spends a day out at the races on Melbourne Cup Day 2012.
