Richmond’s Church Street has become the local magnet for furniture and interior design, so Jardan is a perfect fit there. With an exterior of sky-blue paint and gold signage, it certainly doesn’t get lost among the sea of retail window fronts.

Director and designer, Nick Garnham says, “It was a stroke of luck that we found this place and now that we’re here, we wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. It’s right in the hub and easy to get to from all around Melbourne.”

Architect Iva Foschia of IF Architecture stripped back the building and rejuvenated it with Australian blackbutt timber, Queensland marble and natural, lime-based paint by Bauwerk. Foschia drew inspiration from the modernist styles of John and Sunday Reed, and the Heide Museum of Modern Art.

Stepping into the store is like visiting a house you wish was your own. Flooded with natural light and warm tones, the two-storey interior provides a serene backdrop for the brand’s mid-century modernist-inspired sofas, stools, tables and chairs and an expanding range of products.

These include a move into lifestyle items rather than just functional pieces: bed linen, jewellery by Lucy Folk, ceramics by Porcelain Bear and even a line of Maren surfboards. Sculptures, photographs and paintings by local artists are exhibited throughout and will be regularly refreshed.

The upper level incorporates an open-plan kitchen and entertainment area, complete with a coffee machine and sleek Italian cookware. There’s a section designed for an outdoor setting, decked out with pastel-coloured furniture and pots of leafy plants.

Jardan’s aesthetic is based on designing furniture to suit the contemporary Australian lifestyle. The small company has also been awarded Australia’s highest environmental rating, and was accredited as a carbon-neutral organisation this year.

Unsurprisingly, client demand is booming. With showrooms already in Sydney and Brisbane, and all of Jardan’s products manufactured in Mount Waverly, Garnham says it was the right time to open a flagship store in his hometown.

“We’ve been chipping away in Mount Waverly for 15 years, so it’s nice to be able to showcase our furniture in the way we envisage it,” he says. “We can really celebrate it now.”
