From Bali to Byron Bay, beachside communities and good-for-your-gut food seem to go hand-in-hand. Apollo Bay is no different, with healthful Icaro Cafe pouring so-called medicinal lattes and blending smoothies daily.
Owner Mikhala McCann’s house-made eats are free from refined sugar, and easily accommodate dairy- and gluten-free diets. She sources as much local and organic produce as possible, including Zeally Bay organic sourdough from Torquay and Schulz organic milk from Timboon. Full cream only, no skinny, but you can take your St Ali-roasted coffee with soy, almond, coconut, oat or macadamia alt-milks.
During the cooler months, opt for what McCann says is an immunity-boosting chaga mushroom or turmeric latte. On hot days, cool down with a cold-pressed juice or a sparkling tonic that’s crystal-filtered and infused with botanicals.
To eat, veg-centred seasonal specials join vibrant smoothie bowls and raw-vegan desserts.
