Australian Open 2018 is officially underway. Broadsheet was there on the first day of the tournament to catch the action on and off the court.

While the first day of competition was most notable for the exit of one of the sport’s biggest names – last year’s runner-up Venus Williams was defeated in the first round by Swiss player Belinda Bencic, ranked 78 in the world – the public descended on Birrarung Marr to take in the lively atmosphere of the AO Live Stage.

After an opening night performance from Jimmy Barnes, Vera Blue headlined sun-dappled Day One, as crowds flocked to the food and drink offerings, including the Food Truck Park and Jimmy Grants.

The AO Live Stage runs until January 28 in conjunction with the tournament. Entry is free with your ground pass or stadium ticket.
