Since gaining popularity in NSW (and online), the practice has opened in a prime, light-flooded corner spot on Glenferrie Road. Go for a familiar reformer or mat class, or hop aboard the four-poster-bed-looking Cadillac.

Big Aussie Pilates name Fluidform has developed a strong following (both in Australia and beyond) since launching 10 years ago. With four studios in NSW and one in Brisbane, it’s just opened its first Melbourne location, on Glenferrie Road in Malvern.

“[It’s] been a long time coming,” founder Kirsten King tells Broadsheet.

“We have a significant online database and community in Victoria - many [people] were impacted by Covid and repeated lockdowns. Fluidform at Home provided a moment for a lot of people in Victoria to switch off from what was going on and find a bit of solace in the day.” Plus, Fluidform ran a pop-up at Jackalope Hotel earlier this year.

The prime corner spot is flooded with natural light from huge windows, which wrap around each side. Inside, the open-plan studio has three distinct spaces for each of the main classes on offer: reformer, mat and studio equipment. King says the latter is the most popular and sets Fluidform apart from other studios; it involves a personalised program for each individual in an intimate class limited to just three people.

These sessions incorporate elements from both reformer and mat Pilates, using a range of different equipment and machines – including the Cadillac, a four-poster-bed-like frame, which has gained popularity in recent years among A-list celebrities. “It looks terrifying, but it’s such a versatile piece of equipment that will both support and challenge your body in ways you never knew you could,” King says.

Right now, as part of a foundation membership, you can save $10 week on your weekly Pilates; it includes unlimited mat classes and two reformer classes.
