State Mines Hotel B&B
This stately bed and breakfast was once the prescribed lodgings of the men who worked on the state coal mine in Wonthaggi. The historic building was constructed in 1915 and ceased operations in 1957.
Jeannie and Lance Crook bought the ageing beauty in October 2016 and spent six months restoring the wooden floors, staircase and French doors. They’ve matched these original features with new furniture, plush carpet and wallpaper that feels like it’s from the period.
There are three rooms, each with its own bathroom and robes. The largest “king” room has an en-suite with a steam shower.
A communal kitchen contains space to prepare and enjoy the continental breakfast items provided. Otherwise you can enjoy a cooked breakfast in the downstairs dining room.
This B&B is located next to the Wonthaggi-to-Kilcunda rail trail, which runs for 23 kilometres past native vegetation, historic mining remnants and coastal reserves.
