Heart of Gold Vineyard is a mere ten minutes from Bendigo, yet offers total retreat from the city’s thrum.

The accommodation was taken over by new owners in March 2020 and has been given a loving spruce-up since then. Set within an 1860’s sandstone cottage, it features concrete floors, exposed sandstone walls, a supremely comfortable queen-sized bed, a cosy sitting area, and a large open fire begging to be lit. Huddle around the outdoor fire pit in winter or opt for the pool in summer.

Beyond the manicured rose gardens, you’ll see the surrounding vineyard and the gently- flowing Sheepwash Creek. The nearby dam, complete with pontoon, ornamental boats and the resident ducks, is primed for a sunset drink.

It’s a short walk to the vineyard tasting room, where you can sample Heart of Gold’s Tempranillo, Vermentino, Rosè and Shiraz. If you’re staying for the weekend, expect live music on Sundays during the warmer months. Well-behaved dogs are welcome, too. Just be sure they behave around the ducks.
