Cavedon’s Kilnhouse
From the outside, Cavedon’s Kilnhouse looks much like the region’s historic kilnhouses, when tobacco was the primary harvest.
Inside is a different story. Across three bedrooms and two bathrooms, it blends elements of rural and modernist architecture.
The house is set on 850 acres of farmland in Porepunkah, a 15-minute drive to Bright and close to the base of Mt Buffalo. Fifteen acres of semillion and verdehlo grapevines and the odd grazing cow can be found just past the house’s back deck, which is cloaked in vines that change colour with the seasons.
The kitchen is equipped with a stovetop coffeemaker. There’s also a laundry if you’re staying a while. Bathrooms are kitted out with Australian botanical Leif products; and there are books, magazines and DVDs to keep you entertained.
Earthy materials shape the space – concrete floors join timber-panelled walls, tree trunk stools, tree branch lamps and cow hide rugs. The house contains several nooks perfect for lazing with a book and enjoying your surrounds. There’s an indoor wood fireplace in one of the two lounges, which can both open up to the deck in mild weather.
