On a brisk winter’s evening, rug up, edge close to the fire and dine on wood oven pizzas, fresh salads, homemade bread with house dukkah, and seasonal desserts.

In summer, kick back in the outdoor area, necking a local brew and sampling pizzas depending on available produce. Freshness and taste are the key drivers at Russell’s Pizza, with everything being made from scratch each weekend.

Set in an 1850s Welsh miner’s cottage, the venue has rooms for all occasions. The spacious “ballroom” in a shed allows for a raucous party atmosphere. Otherwise, request a cosy side room near a potbelly stove for a secluded evening. Bringing the pizzas to your table is a mix of locals, from 13-year-old students to people in their late 80s. The vibe is community- and family-minded.

Accordingly, Russell’s is a BYO-friendly place. It’s not uncommon to see eskies filled with cartons of beer or dozens of wine bottles being lugged from wine tour buses to the dining area.

With the set course price inclusive of corkage ($35/$39 a head depending on whether you have dessert), it’s an economical night out.

Don’t worry if you forget your own booze – there’s a limited but pleasant selection of local beers and wines. Open Friday and Saturday nights, and Thursday nights in summer.
