The Trig Container is an award-winning deluxe eco-lodge built on the slopes of Mount Arthur from a recycled shipping container. Only half an hour’s drive from Launceston, The Trig is a secluded weekend getaway surrounded by lush forest.
Owners Susie Aulich and Gordon Cuff designed the container using sustainable and recyclable materials, including at least a dozen salvaged doors that line the main wall. It’s completely off the grid, powered by hydro electricity and solar energy.
If this sounds austere, think again. Small, beautiful touches make The Trig an unforgettable stay, such as a loaf of organic sourdough laid out on the kitchen bench; fresh eggs displayed neatly in vintage egg cups; a bowl of epsom bath salts; bamboo toothbrushes; and soft organic linen.
The combustion wood heater comes stockpiled with plenty of kindling and logs, and gets the container toasty in no time. Wrap yourself in one of the robes, choose one of the local organic wines available for purchase, and give the vinyl collection a spin. Or take your fancy with the many art supplies, books, games and musical instruments on hand.
There’s also an outdoor claw-foot bath where you can relax under the stars, the local sheep and wallabies grazing beside you.
Aulich and Cuff may live a short walk up the hill, but they’re unobtrusive hosts. On a misty night the sense of solitude is all encompassing.
