Why The Tasman Is One of Hobart’s Best Hotels

The Tasman is the place to stay in Hobart. 

In 2024, the waterfront hotel was named in the World’s 50 Best list, alongside just one other Australian property: The Calile in Brisbane. For the past four years in a row, The Tasman has also ranked among the best hotels in Australia and New Zealand in the Conde Nast Traveller Readers’ Choice Awards.

We can see why. Built in 1840s, the former hospital has ultra-luxe suites; a grand design that blend heritage and modernity; and also houses top Hobart restaurant Peppina on the ground floor.

 But what makes The Tasman – Marriott’s first Luxury Collection property in Australia – even more worthwhile is The Keys, a program of experiences and adventures just for guests.  

 “The luxury traveller is increasingly seeking out personalised experiences that take you where nobody else can,” general manager Carolyn Smith tells *Broadsheet*. “We’ve been really fortunate to have great local connections and the ability to secure unfrequented experiences for guests.”

The most all-encompassing experience promises complete immersion in nature, with the exact location and itinerary determined by the weather conditions of the day.A driver will whisk you from The Tasman towards a private property on the east coast. The only others you’ll encounter – apart from your guide and group – are sheep.

First, a moderately difficult hike will lead you to a mountaintop for freshly brewed coffee (and cake) with sweeping views of the rugged coastline. Then, back at sea level, there’ll be yoga on the sand followed by a plunge in a bay you’ve got all to yourself (invigoratingly cold most months of the year). Then: a fireside lunch and journaling.

Want even more adventure? Another experience – in a hidden valley an hour west of Hobart, along the Derwent River – lets you mountain-bike on private trails before a fancy picnic lunch and wine tasting overlooking the vineyards of Meadowbank Wines. 

Prefer something a little more low-key? Join a guided masterclass by “scent sommelier” The Raconteur, best known as a luxury fragrance brand. Over Tasmanian wine and cheese, you’ll dive into the state’s native flora and craft your own candle to take home.

Each of the experiences is run in partnership with expert local operators, who, Smith says, offer an “amplified or enhanced” version of their regular service for The Keys.

The Keys experiences start from $450 per person, exclusively for guests of The Tasman. Reservations are available through the concierge after a hotel booking is made.
