McHenry Distillery
Features
Tucked into the side of Mount Arthur, a 10-minute drive from the infamous penal settlement, McHenry Distillery is situated in one of the most stunning locations in Tasmania. The distillery was founded by William McHenry in 2011, and sitting at 43 degrees south, it’s considered one of the world’s most southerly distilleries.
After finding a Scottish whisky maker in his family tree, McHenry left the pharmaceutical industry and built his distillery in as close to a Scottish climate as he could find. The location is perfect for whisky making: five natural springs exist on the property, supplying all the required water for production.
While McHenry’s whiskies matured, he released a number of award-winning gins and vodkas, and then the first McHenry Single Malt Whisky arrived in 2016. McHenry whiskies mostly start their lives in ex-bourbon casks, and these subtle and creamy single malts will delight lovers of Scotland’s more fragrant, floral whiskies.
The McHenry site has continued to expand, with accommodation cabins and villas available for guests, a new cellar door added, and a range of beers introduced under the McHenry Brewery brand.
This is one of Tasmania’s great destinations for whisky and spirit lovers. Tours run daily during the week, while the distillery is open seven days for tastings.
