Old Kempton Distillery started life at Redlands Estate in Tasmania’s lush Derwent Valley. Senior whisky figures Bill and Lyn Lark were investors and consultants in creating what was originally a paddock-to-bottle whisky operation. But Redlands Estate was sold in 2015 and the decision was made to relocate the distillery to Dysart House, 40 minutes away in Kempton.

Dysart, built in the 1840s, was originally a coach house for weary travellers and their horses. Now, Dysart’s old stables house barrels of quality single malt whisky. The Old Stables name also doubles as Old Kempton’s flagship whisky bottling, and its malty, fruity, toffee flavours are a great introduction to this highly regarded single malt.

Old Kempton’s Dysart cellar door, cafe and providore is a perfect stop-off on the highway between Hobart and Launceston. The cafe, which is open seven days, uses fresh Tasmanian ingredients, while the cellar door has a range of tasting flights featuring Old Kempton’s single malts, gins and liqueurs personalised to suit your tastes.

Distillery tours run daily, and premium tours and tastings can also be booked ahead.
