Norway kickstarted Casey Overeem’s interest in distilling. When visiting relatives there, Overeem was amazed by the tiny distilleries people had in their cellars, and when he returned home to Hobart he started to do some experimenting of his own.

After years of homework and research trips to Scotland, Overeem obtained a distilling licence in 2005 and constructed his whisky distillery in the Australian version of the cellar – his home garage. His meticulous approach led to the creation of Overeem Single Malt Whisky, first released in 2012.

The whisky quickly developed a cult following in Australia and abroad, but what started as a hobby was soon consuming Overeem, so he sold the brand to Lark Distilling. Amazingly, Casey’s daughter Jane, who was the original marketing and sales manager for Overeem, then bought the Overeem brand and whisky stocks back off Lark in 2020.

Jane Overeem and her husband Mark Sawford are now building on Casey’s legacy, with their port, sherry and bourbon cask-matured whiskies winning over an ever-growing legion of fans.

Overeem Distillery is located in Huntingfield, around 15 minutes south of Hobart, not far from the original home distillery. For anyone interested in learning more about this award-winning whisky producer, private tastings and tours for groups can be booked via Overeem’s website.
