Features
Suzie Luck’s is a canteen and cocktail bar that takes pride of place in Hobart's iconic Salamanca Square. The bright and lively diner is by Hobart hospitality veteran Kif Weber (ex-Frank, now-closed Smolt), and celebrates Tasmanian produce through the flavours and techniques found in cuisines from across Asia.
Friendly staff and a casual cocktail vibe set the mood for a fun night out. You might start it with a creative cocktail: the Thai-Pirinha is refreshingly spiked with lychee and lemongrass, while the Express Ya Self is an excellent take on the Espresso Martini, with a torched marshmallow garnish. For groups, the cocktail jugs are well worth considering.
Eating is a lot of fun here, too. Start with the DIY roll ups, lined with either roast pork, roast duck or salt and pepper tofu. A crowd favourite is the tempura eggplant, which packs a punch with its combo of chilli-lime caramel, cashews and herbs. The curries are filled with flavour, too – go for the creamy massaman, which has Wagyu beef shin that falls apart. And if you have decision overload, either of the banquet options will offer the best of the menu.
If you’re with a group, Suzie Luck’s dietary-friendly menu is a crowd-pleaser. It has dedicated sections for diners who are shellfish- and crustacean-free; garlic- and onion-free; vegan and vegetarian; and gluten-free. With enough notice, the team will cater for most dietary requirements.
With such broad appeal, it’s best to book ahead here, especially if you want to snag a seat at the bar. Up there, you can choose from a decent selection of beers on tap and in tinnies, as well as a robust list of Australian wines. And if you're not drinking, don't worry – the bar team will whip up a booze-free cocktail that calls in your favourite flavours.
