Features
Occupying a high-ceilinged corner shop in Dickson, Highroad is one of a handful of national flagship cafes for Canberra specialty coffee roaster, Ona (the others are in Melbourne and Sydney).
As you’d expect, coffee takes centre stage here. Two sleek espresso machines and multiple coffee grinders overlook the casual space, which is strewn with a mixture of tables, cosy booths and bar seating. A fit-out comprising natural timbers, exposed brick and decorative cornices channels a sophisticated mid-century aesthetic. Natural light floods the space through wraparound floor-to-ceiling windows.
The approachable all-day menu is peppered with familiar brunch dishes, though they’re presented in surprising ways. Avocado on toast with poached eggs sounds normal enough, but a twist sees it served on focaccia with fresh herbs and Vegemite ricotta. On the sweeter side, French toast arrives as an impressive tower of poached pear, meringue, chocolate and mascarpone. The offering also caters for various dietary requirements and whims – if you’re chasing a side of fried chicken with your French toast, that’s absolutely an option here.
Ona is one of the country’s most highly awarded coffee roasters, so naturally the range of brew methods and flavour possibilities for your daily ritual are seemingly endless here – as is the staff’s knowledge of coffee. Seasonal blends and single origins are available in espresso, filter and nitro formats, and there’s a formidable retail section for brewing at home. Beyond coffee, you’ll also find a list of shakes, plus a curation of wines, beers and house cocktails.
