When the team behind the buzziest bakery in the country – maybe even the world – decides to open a wine bar, the stakes are naturally going to feel higher. But Lune Croissanterie’s Kate and Cam Reid, along with business partner Nathan Toleman and general manager Ryan Butler, have well and truly exceeded them with Butler, a tiny wine bar right next to Lune’s South Brisbane location.
While there aren’t any croissants here, you can expect a menu of elegant snacks and bigger dishes. The offering changes frequently but you might start with oysters served with a kombu mignonette, mushroom tart with tarragon mayo, or a simple plate of house pickles and ferments. Scaling up, you might order sous vide pork belly served with gochujang and puffed buckwheat.
The wine list favours Australian drops, with a good focus on Queensland winemakers. The backbar, meanwhile, is stocked with spirits such as Poor Toms gin from Sydney, Starward whisky from Victoria, and Idle Hour vodka made in Brisbane.
Butler might be tiny, but it makes the most of its space. With seating wrapping all the way around the spotted gum bar to the service area, you can sit right in the middle of the action. Or, for those chasing something more intimate, there's a small second room with two semi-private tables.
