Tippler’s Tap had cult status at its original Newstead location, but owners Emily Russell and Brian Kennedy brought their bar to the masses by reopening it in South Bank.

Previously home to their venue Tomahawk, the space on Grey Street has allowed them to focus solely on the Tippler’s brand, even though they joked about calling the new bar “Tipplehawk”.

Retaining the quirk and charm of the original Tippler’s was important. American landscapes adorn the walls and a pinball and retro gaming machine are enough to sketch out a vintage Americana concept. Long tables promote sharing, and there are smaller nooks for those wanting a more intimate affair.

The bar’s focal point is 13 taps sunk flush into a wall behind the bar, which play host to a shifting lineup of craft brews. The staff is more than willing to offer tasters and some advice on what might suit your palate. A tasting paddle (five x 150ml serves for $20) is a good way to experience the variety on offer.

A small kitchen wraps behind the bar. From a tiny pass that’s reminiscent of a food truck, chef Frances Scott and the team pump out Chicago-style street food.

The small yet refined menu of sandwiches, hotdogs and sliders – as well as some moreish sides – complement the abundance of beer. The wings and fries are clear crowd favourites.
