Miss Sophia’s Gelateria in is by John and Amanda Scott, who since 2009 have run Milk in Ashgrove. More recently, the Scotts opened Farm House, a brunch destination for Kedron locals. Miss Sophia’s Gelateria is next door to Farm House, bringing further life to the former site of iconic fruit shop Farmer Joe’s.

The gelato is made on-site using as much local and fresh produce as possible. The dairy is from a co-op in the Scenic Rim, the sugar comes from Bundaberg and the honey from Maleny. A lemon flavour once featured fruit from the Scotts’ own backyard. The shop is a place of texture and colour. The wallpaper behind the cabinets features pieces of watermelon, strawberries, mangoes and other fruits. A handful of marble tables line one side of the store, perched below a handsome mint-green pressed-metal wall. On the opposite side is a large, custom-made Scrabble board, which lists each of the flavours.

There are 20 offered every day, including white chocolate, stracciatella, pistachio and watermelon. While some will rotate, flavours such as milk and cookies and crème brulee are permanent fixtures. As well as low-sugar options there are five vegan flavours, including one made of toasted coconut and coconut water.
