Libertine Parfumerie
Some use only a single signature scent. Others change with the seasons or their mood. Either way, there’s real joy in smelling nice.
For those who love perfumes, history and knowledge, the Champagne-enhanced masterclasses at New Farm’s Libertine Parfumerie will train your nose to differentiate between Penhaligon’s and Amouage, to detect a Clive Christian with a sniff.
The hour-long journey through perfume history, learning to use Fragrances of the World founder Michael Edwards’ indispensable fragrance wheel, is the boutique’s most obvious extravagance. But a drop-in visit is similarly rewarding.
Director and owner Nick Smart opened Libertine just off James Street in 2008. The inner-city luxury boutique counts some of the world’s most exalted perfume houses among suppliers, with a few dozen brands filling its ornate vintage shelving, including Australian exclusives BDK Parfums, Mizensir, Range and Roos & Roos.
A sister partnership with international luxury fragrance distributor Agence de Parfum helps to augment an already impressive range of men’s and women’s fragrances. The elaborate glass bottles share the Parisian space with luxury home fragrances and bath and beauty products from around the world.
