The Fifty Six, a sophisticated Chinese restaurant from chef Gerald Ong, sits on the top floor of the heritage-listed Naldham House.

The venue takes its name from Queensland’s first Chinese migrants – a group of 56 labourers who arrived in Brisbane in 1848. Ong, whose resume includes Chairman & Yip (the Canberra outpost of Hong Kong’s Chairman restaurant) as well as Sydney restaurants Porteño and Automata , honours the history of Chinese immigration to Brisbane through his menu.

There’s Moreton Bay bug pao fan in a in superior broth – made from seafood, chicken, pork and mushrooms – poured tableside. Plus, a concise but considered dim sum menu, featuring stars like the prawn har gow.

For dessert, you might go for deep-fried toffee ice-cream served with fresh cream and char siu caramel sauce.
