Previously if you were on Montague Road there was a good chance you needed of a car wrecker or discount bridal store. But then a bunch of developments started springing up along the river – it was only a matter of time before entrepreneurial minds realised the street’s potential as a dining destination.
Pour Choices is one of the results. A passion project of owners Tim Davies, Rory Guy and Leo Channon, the venue is an open-plan bar of wood and large windows, with a lush, tree-lined verandah running along its frontage.
The food is modern-Australian with an Asian influence, bringing a technical flair to crowd-pleaser pub food. Popcorn chicken with yuzu mayo and pepper caramel beef sliders stick out on the snack menu. Saturday mornings peddle traditional breakfasts of eggs Benedict, Nutella waffles and green eggs and ham, with coffee supplied by neighbours The Cheeky Bean.
Behind the bar, the selection focuses on hop-forward craft beers, and the all-Australian wine list is bolstered by Channon’s father’s own winery, Robert Channon Wines, in Queensland’s Granite Belt region.
The unique space provides plenty of opportunity for interesting renovation, such as opening the windows onto the street, with a bar facing the footpath.
