The Latest
Layla’s new Spice and Sound series brings hibachi-grilled bites and DJs to its leafy courtyard every Sunday afternoon, staring August 3. From 1:30pm to 5:30pm, the Middle Eastern diner is plating smoky dishes like chicken shish and eggplant with flatbread. There’ll also be smaller dishes like Wagyu empanadas, butter chicken and grilled Fremantle octopus.
On the cocktail list: The Winter Bloom, with whiskey, arak, apple and spiced honey.
Bookings are recommended but walk-ins are also welcome.
Features
Melbourne chef and restaurateur Shane Delia is best known for his Middle Eastern restaurants Maha and its sibling venues Maha North and Maha East.
Layla, his first Queensland venue, is located inside a heritage-listed section of the Thomas Dixon Centre – home of Queensland Ballet.
Take a seat in the moody dining room or sunny outdoor courtyard for a menu that starts with small plates such as king crab dressed in coriander and lime; a signature flatbread that’s brushed in toum, dusted with fennel and served alongside smoky dips; and pistachio-crusted quail.
Mains include eight-hour slow-roasted lamb shoulder; coal-grilled swordfish T-bone with burnt orange and saffron; and roast duck with walnuts and pomegranate.
