Burgers

When Brent and Amy Poulter’s food truck, The BBQ Joint, made its debut on the streets of Brisbane, only ten per cent of the food was sold on his first day. But the Poulters didn’t give up. A few market gigs here and there saw the tenacious meat maestro gradually attract Brisbane’s attention. In 2014, they opened their first outlet in Carina, Getta Burger.

In the morning, it’s The Coffee Joint, operated by baker Wal Wolinski. At noon, the coffee beans and milk jugs are put away and the space is transformed into Getta Burger, where Brent grinds his own burger patties, smokes his own beef and makes his own sauces.

Getta Burger’s fan base can be found ordering the namesake Getta Burger, a hulking cheeseburger topped with onion, pickles, tomato relish and mayo. Those with more elastic stomachs opt for the Getta Boss, a meaty affair of 12-hour smoked beef brisket, crispy bacon, double cheese, pickle, barbeque sauce and jalapenos.

Likewise, the fries are a meal on their own, especially if you order what the menu affectionately calls the ‘filthy’ option: fries, covered in an avalanche of cheese, smoked brisket, pulled pork, grilled onion, maple bacon and three sauces. If you can find the room, finish with a soft drink or pie shake, where ice cream and a slice of apple pie are blended into a milkshake.
