85 Miskin Street
85 Miskin Street is a restaurant much like its owner and head chef, Brent Farrell – friendly, warm and unpretentious. Located in an old shop on a leafy Toowong backstreet, it’s a place you won’t find unless you go looking.
Farrell plays with French and Asian influences in contemporary ways while paying homage to classic techniques. There’s crispy confit chicken wing with bearnaise and kimchi; and citrus- cured salmon with raspberry, hibiscus and dill creme fraiche.
The approach to drinks is a little more old school. With about 150 wines to choose from, there’ll either be a trusty old faithful or a new discovery.
White tongue and groove walls and polished floorboards create a stark, understated backdrop, one that doesn’t distract from the food – the real star of the show. It’s a far cry from Farrell’s early fine-dining days under the moniker at Brent’s. That ended in 2014 when he tore up the carpets and gave the venue a lick of paint to create a more relaxed and approachable space.
On the weekends, 85 Miskin is open for breakfast. Dishes include cinnamon and tonka bean porridge; and wattle-seed waffles with violet ice cream. But if you really want to see what 85 Miskin is made of, order the breakfast degustation.
