Statler and Waldorf
Caxton Street’s maturation into an entertainment hub owes a lot to Jay Lambert and Steve McDermott’s efforts in transforming the old Stadium Bar into the charming Statler and Waldorf pub.
In the midst of the transition from a tired old game day pub, plywood was pulled off the wall to reveal exposed brick and a fireplace. These two features are key to the homely vibe.
The menu changes occasionally, but there’s always a section devoted to enjoying the atmosphere over olives, duck sausage rolls, cheese boards and the like. Mains might take in eggplant parma, braised lamb shanks or a spiced chickpea burger.
Daily specials are scribbled on a ream of butcher’s paper hanging from the ceiling offering handmade pasta, roasts and home-style pies to suit the season. And the pub won’t let you forget: you can add bacon to anything for just $3.
The drinks list is simple, with a focus on draught beer and mature spirits. The range of cocktails usually aligns with whatever is fresh and abundant at the Rocklea Markets. Or you can try something a bit more traditional (there’re Manhattans on tap). It’s still tough to get a seat on game days, but this pub shines brightly regardless of who’s playing.
