The Malecón

The Malecón can be found by a small red lamp illuminating an otherwise black shopfront that sits adjacent to Suncorp Stadium. When the curtains aren’t drawn you can peer through the window at copper vats lit up by the street lights – parts of a working distillery attached to the space.

This Cuban-themed cocktail lounge and bar offers homey service reminiscent of prohibition-era 1930s New York crossed with the relaxed vibes of modern-day Cuba. Some of its drinks are made with in-house distilled spirits and some use native botanicals such as lemon myrtle, pepperberry, tamarind, quandongs.

The bar hosts weekly Cuban-style jazz and rum-focused tasting sessions, which sample some of the 80-odd bottles stocked behind the bar.

The bar also aims to avoid waste where it can; it re-uses produce for infusions or fermentations. The menu ranges from variations on daiquiris and pina coladas to more exotic creations such as hot-buttered rum, and a Penicillin built on rum, Lyle’s golden syrup and lemon curd.
