Queen Elizabeth II is Australia’s official head of state. That has very little bearing on how we live our lives day-to-day, with a couple of exceptions. The most noteworthy? The Queen’s Birthday public holiday. The Queen’s actual birthday is in April, but because of how many public holidays there are around then, most Commonwealth states officially celebrate her birthday on a different date that’s better suited to a day off.

This year, the Queen's Birthday public holiday falls on Monday, October 5. Here are all of the restaurants, bars and cafes staying open to help you make the most of the holiday .
