Nathan Zuckerman, Joey Day and Aaron Wilson, the three mates behind Ze Pickle, are at it again.

This time, it’s Ze Qickle, a food truck spin-off of the Ze Pickle brand. Launching in Brisbane this Friday, the new four-wheeled venture will take up the prized position outside Green Beacon Brewing Co.

Typical of Ze Pickle, this isn’t just any old food truck. The left-hand drive 1984 Chevy was bought at a Los Angeles police auction after the vehicle had been used to transport illicit materials and goods. The trio took the truck apart, shipped it to Australia, and rebuilt it on local shores with a kitchen in the back. With a subtle (or not) vinyl wrap, the final impression is of something out of a Michael Mann film.

At any time, the food truck’s menu will consist of between two and four burgers — some drawn from the Ze Pickle menu, along with special releases. “We tend to come up with a lot of stuff,” Wilson says, “but to implement it into all three stores is quite tough so at the food truck you’ll see a lot of one-off crazy things.”

The food truck is just the first step of a wider move to build the Ze Qickle brand, expanding upon the three popular Ze Pickle outlets in Burleigh Heads, Fortitude Valley and Sydney. The extended plan involves venturing into hole-in-the-wall spots in busy areas such as the CBD and the airport. The tiny stores will not have liquor licensing, with the main focus on a rotating menu of four burgers that will change monthly. “It’s [about creating] a dumbed-down version of Ze Pickle,” Wilson says.

The menu for the Green Beacon Brewery event this Friday includes a fried-chicken burger with a beer-cheese sauce using Green Beacon’s IPA, along with lettuce, tomato and guacamole. Altered versions of the popular The Chee-ze and the Pecan Wood Smoked Brisket burger will also be on offer.

More than 500 free burgers were given away at the Gold Coast launch of the food truck last weekend. There won’t be freebies this Friday, but such Brisbane events are definitely on the cards. “It’s a promotion tool we might use in the Brisbane CBD,” Wilson says. “We’ll have it parked and do a big giveaway.”
