Mark your calendars: the annual World Class Cocktail Week is back for another run of parties, pairings, tastings and masterclasses, led by Brisbane’s best bartenders.

Running between May 7 and May 13, highlights across the week include learning how to make whisky cocktails for home at Cobbler’s Cocktails in Your Kitchen; choosing your own botanicals and designing your dream gin and tonic at Pony Dining; and dropping into Buffalo Bar to pair a classic American Reuben Sandwich with a World Class Boilermaker cocktail.

For southern US flavours, Seymour’s Cocktails and Oysters is hosting a New Orleans cocktail dinner, which will feature four courses of modern cocktails and dishes inspired by historic New Orleans bars and restaurants. World Class bartender, Cameron Pirret, is designing the innovative drinks menu for the event, using different spirits and techniques to encourage people to try something new.

“The great thing about Cocktail Week is it takes the focus off individual drinks and alcohol, and creates more of a buzz about doing something creative and different,” he says.

Last year,127 World Class Cocktail Week events took place nationwide, across three consecutive weeks. This year – in its biggest showing yet – the event is running for the same week in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, starting on May 7 and finishing on May 13, World Cocktail Day.

The program runs in the lead up to the annual international World Class Bartender of the Year competition, where the best bartenders from across the globe come together and compete for the title of the world’s best bartender for 2017. The global final will be held in Mexico City later this year.

Closer to home, Pirret says World Class Cocktail Week is a way to celebrate the global appeal of cocktails in a local setting.

“It’s promoting how spirits can be used to celebrate culture,” he says. “Sure, we drink them and enjoy them. But it’s also about the social interaction behind them, the memory and the experience.”
