Good food, beer and staff that remembers your name. That’s the rationale behind Suburban Social Neighbourhood Bar and Kitchen, Chapel Hill’s newest bar.

The place is the first hospitality venture for inner-west locals Kris Dadson and Luke Dillon. The idea came from a trip to New Zealand. “We noticed how loyal people were to locally produced products and it really struck a chord with me,” Dillon says.

A relaxed vibe and commitment to Australian producers characterises Suburban Social. The beers on tap are Newstead Brewing Co and Stone & Wood, and the wine is all-Australian. Rupert Wilson, Suburban Social’s head bartender, says they’d like to eventually transition to all-Aussie spirits, too, with a focus on local gins and whiskies.

The food is well-executed gastropub fare: burgers; flathead fish tacos; and the tongue-in-cheek Suburban Snack Pack that replaces doner-kebab meat with slow-cooked chicken. Hotheads shouldn’t miss the “RIP” spicy chicken wings, and there is takeaway lunch for those on the go.

Surburban Social sits in a light-filled space off Moggill Road. There are turquoise tiles fronting the bar and a graffitied wall mural. Dadson and Dillon did the fit-out themselves, recycling structural timber and other materials from the space’s previous incarnation as a home brew store.
