Hidden at the end of a nondescript arcade alongside a hairdresser’s and a ramen joint, Josie North is an unexpected find on one of Toowong’s busiest commercial strips.
“It’s a bit of a play on the Melbourne laneway culture – going down a dingy laneway and you find a beautiful coffee shop there,” says owner Matt Roggenkamp of the choice of location for his first cafe.
Formerly the chef at The Single Guys, Roggenkamp’s love of coffee runs just as deep as his love of food. At Josie North, he is serving the type of brews you’d expect from an alumnus of The Single Guys. “We consider ourselves a multi-roaster cafe,” he says. “So we always have something different and exciting on.”
At the moment you can choose between roasts from Seven Seeds, Small Batch and Reuben Hills. Like anything, coffee is seasonal and Roggenkamp says these roasters were chosen because they source the freshest coffee internationally depending on the time of year. All of the blends are displayed on the counter, and filter coffee is also on offer.
There’s Mörk hot chocolate for non-coffee drinkers, while tea and food menus are still being finalised. For the latter, expect pared-back offerings for breakfast and lunch. Jazzed-up porridge, a breakfast burger with a sausage patty and open sandwiches will all come onstream in about two weeks. In the meantime, Gramercy doughnuts and croissants from Crust & Co. are filling the void.
The fact that Josie North is the first coffee joint of its kind in Toowong surprises Roggenkamp. “Toowong is so close to the CBD with a lot of Monday-to-Friday workers and uni students, and I thought that it needed a really fantastic coffee shop,” he explains. “I truly believe we are going above and beyond using these Melbourne and Sydney roasters who are sourcing exceptional quality coffee.”
