Brisbane’s south side (think anything past Woolloongabba) is often overlooked even by the most dedicated diners. But you can get a great – and affordable – feed in Annerley and the adjacent suburbs; you just need to know where to look. Here are three dishes in and around Annerley that won’t cost you more than a lobster-coloured note.
Tamarind chicken banh mi, Cafe O-Mai – $12.50
You only need to have one Cafe O-Mai banh mi to understand why the place is an institution. Its tamarind chicken banh mi is bursting at the seams with punchy tamarind and fish sauce-marinated chicken that’s been cooked over coals. Classic accompaniments follow: pickled carrot and radish, cucumber, coriander and mayonnaise. Request a healthy smear of pate and the sandwich is complete.
Tostadas, Mama Taco – $12–20
Mama Taco’s shatteringly crisp tostada is sturdy to the point that it won’t break when dipped in guacamole. The customisable add-ons are the star of the show – from chunky pico de gallo and savoury frijoles to crispy artichokes and bright escabeche, there are no wrong answers.

SUBSCRIBE NOWQuanta firfir, Yeshi Buna – $20
At Yeshi Buna in Moorooka, the quanta firfir – a dried beef stew served with injera (a fermented flatbread) – has a home cook’s touch. The beef is simmered with chef Yeshi Engida’s berbere – her own blend of punchy red pepper and 20-odd-spices. Finish the meal with a strong cup of coffee from a traditional jebena.
