With many of us in isolation and bare shelves at the major supermarkets, now is the time to look to our local farmers and suppliers. Reap the benefits of fresh-as-they-come fruit, veg, meat and pantry staples from these six independent businesses. All of them are delivering (or offering click-and-collect), and some even come with recipes.
Scenic Rim Farm Box
An initiative of local farmers, food and wine advocates and the Scenic Rim Regional Council, the Scenic Rim Farm Box was created to make up for lost tourism dollars during the 2020 shutdown. Order cheese, honey, booze, meat, baked goods and even skincare from some of the region’s best producers and have it delivered from Wednesday to Saturday. If you’re lacking inspiration, or overwhelmed by choice, try a “leave it to us” box, which sits at around $125 and includes a weekly selection of seasonal vegetables, fruit and meat, with recipes to help you decide on dinner.
Zone Fresh Gourmet Markets
Inner-north Brisbane locals have been devotees of Zone Fresh in Windsor since 2002 thanks to its excellent deli selection and fresh gourmet produce. Purchased from the Rocklea markets daily, the team here makes buying local easy, and now it also offers next-day delivery and click-and-collect. Shop online and filter the goods by whether they’re on special, in season or local to customise your fruit-and-veg box. Delivery is available in most Brisbane suburbs, but check your area before you order.
Charlie’s Fruit Market
This much-loved fruit-and-veg shop has been kicking in Everton Park since 1999. The huge store boasts a large array of produce, which is all available online for home delivery and click-and-collect. Choose from prime picks, ugly-but-affordable and perfect-for-juicing fruit and veg, or buy in bulk with boxes for couples and small or large families. Deliveries are made in the mornings between 6am and 12pm, and are available for most Brisbane suburbs (check the website to see if you need to click-and-collect instead).
Big Michael’s Fruit and Vegetables
Big Michael’s brings the freshness of Rocklea’s markets straight to you, with home delivery across most of Brisbane. By setting up shop among the Brisbane Markets, the team is able to nab some of the best fruit and vegetables to pack customised orders for individuals and wholesale. Pick select products or order a mixed produce box, with free delivery on orders over $40 (making this one of the most affordable options on this list). Check out the Facebook page for a wealth of knowledge on its fruit and veggies, and order online here for Tuesday or Thursday delivery.
Brisbane Valley Farm Direct
Shopping sustainably for meat is hard at the best of times – especially when visiting the big supermarkets – but businesses like Brisbane Valley Farm Direct are making it easier. These fourth-generation Brisbane Valley farmers produce naturally fermented pasture-fed beef, lamb, chicken and quail, which they’ve supplied to restaurants such as Donna Chang, Greca and Tartufo. Boxes are available for bulk orders, choose-your-own-adventure custom orders, or family meal deals, with meat, vegetables and shopping lists for five different recipes included. Order here by 2pm on Mondays to receive your box the following Friday.
Harris Farm Markets
Being unable to pick your own quality produce can be the most nerve-wracking thing about shopping online. Harris Farm Markets’ focus on beautiful in-season food makes it an aesthetically pleasing experience in-store, and you can expect your online order will be much the same. Browse fresh seafood, meat, fruit, vegetables and deli staples with organic options for most, as well as ready-to-cook packs and bundles. The team delivers to the Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, Tweed and Byron areas, with free standard delivery for orders over $120 on Wednesdays.
