“We want to make our mark in Brisbane,” Toby’s Estate head of coffee Nich Rae tells Broadsheet.
Some of Brisbane’s best cafes are using beans from longstanding coffee label Toby’s Estate; now, Brisbane coffee fanatics can enjoy a brand new immersive experience at the flagship cafe that opened last month.
Toby’s Estate was created by Sydney lawyer-turned-coffee-fanatic Toby Smith in 2001. It quickly won over baristas and coffee lovers at home at overseas. Twenty-three years since its inception, the label has two flagship cafes in Sydney as well as outposts in the Philippines, Singapore, Indonesia and the Middle East.

SUBSCRIBE NOWThe cafe, which sits on the corner of Doggett and Longland Streets, was designed by notable Melbourne architects Russell & George, which also designed the brand’s Chippendale and Dubai flagships. The hero of the warmly lit, contemporary space is a round coffee bar. With baristas at the centre of the ring, punters can step up to the bar and order the brand’s signature espresso and filter coffee. Or chat with the team, which will also be on hand to provide expertise and suggestions.
Rae shared that Brisbanites have set themselves apart from other coffee drinkers with their willingness to try new things and experience their everyday coffee differently.
The Newstead venue will offer extensive free monthly tastings with skilled baristas talking through a diverse range of beans, including sharing their flavour profiles and how the coffee is processed.
The Longland Street cafe will also serve everyday cafe essentials – from avo toast to pastries – but, ultimately, coffee is the star of the show here.
