Opportunity to sip on some Parallel Roasters in Brisbane is hardly limited. Since opening its Sumner roastery in 2016 the slick, approachable coffee brand has popped up at a bunch of specialty spots across the city.
Now fans can enjoy the full Parallel experience, owner Ben Graham opening a flagship cafe and retail space in Albion.
Parallel Roasters already had a small stake in Camp, which opened in the premises last year, but previous owners Nick Maschke and Kristina Sika’s decision to step back from that concern allowed Graham the opportunity to take over the space completely.
“It’s definitely been a goal to get into the retail space,” says Graham, who has also been involved with The Single Guys and One Drop. “[We want] to show the public what we can do when we have total control over the product.”
A mild revamp of the shop has been headed up by Amy Boughen. There’s a fresh navy colour scheme, updates to bench seating and new fixtures by Talty Sargent. Most notably, the Camp mural has been painted over leaving bright white and navy walls.
Simple seasonal food with a couple of vegan dishes is much the same as the Camp offering. Really, though, this is very much about the coffee; Camp was already closely aligned with Parallel, but the change means more opportunity to try different things.
“We make sure that we always have our full range of coffees available to take home and as many as we can on the bar,” Graham says. “We’ll always have two filter coffees on batch brew available, always two espresso options and a filter pour-over as well.”
Parallel will continue to host industry events, only now it will be from its own shop rather than in various spots around Brisbane. Keep an eye out for talks and cupping (tasting) events in the future.
