If anyone knows how to open neighbourhood bars, it’s Gillian Letham and Gerard Hartnett. The duo behind two of the city’s best – The Woods in Mitchelton and The Oxford Tap House in Bulimba – have now launched their third venue, Clover Neighbourhood Bar, which opened last month in the former Suburban Social space in Holland Park.

For the new venue, they have tapped long-term staff member Aaron O’Sullivan as venue manager. After successfully fostering a close-knit community at The Oxford Tap House, O’Sullivan aims to do the same with Clover.

“It’s called a neighbourhood bar because we are very community-minded,” O’Sullivan tells Broadsheet. “We want to know your name and that you like an IPA, but you like trying new things. It’s a really big focus for us.”

Clover’s fit-out has a dual focus: there is timber, terracotta colour and leather banquettes in the front section, while the back has plenty of natural light and is decorated in light green and white tones. Like the team’s other two venues, it’s a beautiful space – one that makes you want to linger.

“We wanted to go with something light, but maintain a cosy atmosphere with earthy tones,” O’Sullivan says. “I’ve lost count of how many people have said [Clover] feels really homey.”

Like The Woods and The Ox, Clover has a strong focus on craft beer, with six taps dedicated to supporting small-scale breweries. Some beers will stay on permanently, while others will rotate. You might find interstate breweries like Common People and Kaiju alongside Newstead’s Range Brewing. There’s also Guinness and ginger beer on tap, plus a small wine list, including mulled wine during the cooler months, and a selection of cocktails.

The food menu revolves around pub classics like steak, chicken schnitzel and a parmie. There are four burgers, including a southern fried chicken burger with coleslaw, grilled bacon and chilli jam; and the Clover burger, featuring a Wagyu beef patty, onion, pickles, tomato, caramelised onions, cheese and Clover’s signature burger sauce. The snack options are a bit more elevated and include teriyaki-glazed tiger prawns, fried zucchini flowers and truffled mushroom arancini.
