New Farm Deli is set to return in a temporary space after a fire swept through its iconic Merthyr Village premises earlier this month. The business will move into the tenancy recently vacated by Chinese restaurant Big Fortune on the Merythr Road side of Merthyr Village (8/85 Merthyr Road), with a coffee cart parked in front of the original cafe.

The pop-up will sell the deli’s usual selection of cheeses, meats, breads, pasta sauces and takeaway meals. The coffee cart will serve Vittoria espresso along with a selection of baked goods and focaccias.

New Farm Deli’s Sebastian Anello told Broadsheet the pop-up deli and coffee cart will act as a placeholder for regulars ahead of the reopening later this year. “Our main objective was to provide and give back to the community,” Anello says. “Provide [to] the customers who have relied so heavily on our service over the last four decades, with a local hangout and an option for coffee with fresh Italian meats and cheeses.”

It also helps keep the cafe’s remaining staff engaged with the business. “[They] have devoted their time to be with us, whether it’s scrubbing things, lifting things, moving things,” he says. “We’re very grateful for how well our staff have treated us and how loyal they’ve been to us.”

The pop-up will run until the original New Farm Deli reopens. A rebuild is already underway with the fit-out expected to be completed by Christmas. Anello says the new cafe will include a new coffee machine and upgraded kitchen equipment.

The New Farm Deli coffee cart is expected to be in place from next week with the pop-up following soon after.
