If you’re still mulling over the reasons Montrachet’s Shannon Kellam and Clare Wallace decided to move out of their iconic Given Terrace digs and into a brand new space on King Street, here’s a good one.

It means they can shut down the adjacent Machinery Street and throw a mini champagne festival. On Saturday December 9 from 10am to 2pm, the restaurant is closing off the street to traffic for Champagne Laneway, a Parisian-themed brunch of artisan pastries, baguettes and loaves of fresh bread matched to 12 different champagnes.

Guests will receive a glass of NV Louis Roederer Brut Premier upon arrival before three pop-up bars cycle through a selection of vintage, non-vintage and rosé champagnes.

The event is designed as a celebration of the new Montrachet, which will have double the seats and a kitchen twice as large as the Given Terrace location, as well as a glass-framed cellar. “[We want] to recreate the ambiance of Montrachet, but in a better setting,” Wallace told Broadsheet in late August.

The new restaurant will also pack a bakery under the same roof, hence the selections of almond croissants, coffee éclairs, double-smoked ham cruffins and charcuterie-stuffed baguettes being on offer at Champagne Laneway. In attendance on the day will be Lyon baker Patrick Delbar, who Kellam and Wallace have seconded to Brisbane for three months to get their own team of chefs up to speed with French baking.
