When Kim Peabody and Shona Brice opened Greens & Grains last year, those wishing to sample the pair’s salads and pastries had to journey all the way out to Graceville. Nevertheless, the boutique takeaway joint quickly gathered a loyal following, the result being the opening earlier this month of a sister store on Clayfield’s busy Sandgate Road.

The original Greens & Grains’ raison d’être was to ease the domestic workload of busy parents who had little time to prepare lunches and dinners. Peabody and Brice offered a solution with a selection of pre-made meals that are tasty, locally sourced and hopefully healthier than what you’d get from a typical takeaway shop.

The store’s new location mimics the first’s minimal aesthetic with a large salad bar occupying the majority of the front counter and fridges packed full of juices and cold drinks. An eclectic rotating menu of seasonal salads includes options such as balsamic roasted eggplant and Israeli cous cous with turmeric yoghurt dressing; a roast carrot and quinoa salad with miso dressing; and Peabody and Brice’s take on the ever-popular panzanella.

“We really do cater for everyone,” Peabody says. “We’re not trying to be too healthy. We’ve got a range of house-made sweets and other pastries that we get delivered daily from Crust & Co Artisan Baking.

“We also supply four choices of pre-cooked meats, which includes pulled pork, pulled Asian chicken, a pulled brisket and chilli beef,” Peabody says. “They’re slow-cooked for 12 hours and then we pre-package them so it makes dinner just that little bit easier.”

The Clayfield shop’s one mark of difference? An ivory white La Marzocco coffee machine brewing its way through bags of Byron Bay’s Allpress beans – a no-doubt welcome touch for a busy northside parent on the go.
