The Fanda Group has turned Southside’s Kiki kiosk into Goodside, an Asian brunch cafe doing rice bowls, cha chaan teng-inspired sandwiches and brightly hued drinks.

If your socials have been blowing up with photos of a prawn har gow katsu sando, you can thank Benny Lam from the Fanda Group (Rick Shores, Central, Marlowe). It’s become the signature dish at Goodside, a cafe that opened in the former Kiki kiosk outside the group’s Fish Lane restaurant, Southside, in June.

Lam says the sandwich evolved from a dish he used to serve at Central. “I had a Hong Kong-style fish burger, using dim sim technique to make the fish patty,” he says. “This sando is a similar concept, using prawn har gow [filling] to make a Japanese-style katsu. Then we finish it with Chinese-style pickled radish and a jalapeno salsa.”

The bread is baked to Lam’s recipe by a Sunnybank bakery. It’s “sort of like Taiwanese toast with a slight sweetness”, Lam says. The dish quickly became Goodside’s bestseller, with the team sometimes making 70 to 80 a day.

The short menu is filled with salty, sticky ingredients. It features an egg and ham sandwich inspired by Hong Kong’s famous cha chaan teng diners, a ham and cheese pocket with sun-dried tomato, and two rice bowls, including one with pork belly, sticky soy, Asian greens and a tea egg (cracked and boiled in tea). Sweets include a matcha tart, and a baked coffee bun filled with cappuccino custard.

To drink, there’s a Goodside iced coffee made with double espresso, iced tea and condensed milk cold foam, and a lychee iced tea and watermelon mocktail, both finished with coconut cold foam.

For those who remember Kiki, not a lot has changed. The kiosk now sports some yellow branding but with the same seating beneath the South Brisbane rail overpass, surrounded by lush greenery. Come evening, it transforms into the Southside Garden bar, serving the restaurant’s outdoor diners.
