The Good Food and Wine Show has returned to Brisbane for 2017. From today, a bunch of different chefs, restaurants and suppliers will take over the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, peddling everything from Napoli pizza to gorgonzola cones.
The event’s three-day tenure means most ticketed events run multiple times across the weekend, making it easy to get involved. Here’s what to check out this year.
The Smelly Cheese Project
Adelaide’s The Smelly Cheese Shop will be in residence at this year’s Good Food and Wine Show, running multiple sessions of two different ticketed events: a survey of some of the best cheeses from around the world; and a sparkling-wine and cheese matching session (both cost $40). Also, it will be selling gorgonzola cones. Yes, you read that correctly.
400 Gradi Margherita Pizza Masterclass
You may not have a specially imported oven for 90 secondi margherita pizza, but 400 Gradi – one of the Melbourne restaurants that helped light a fire under Australia’s Napoli pizza craze – can show you everything else. These 45-minute classes promise to teach punters how to create the style of dough and sauces so essential to creating a perfect margherita pizza. Tickets are $25.
EAT, Presented by the Citibank Dining Program
This pop-up dining precinct features restaurants peddling abbreviated menus of some of their most popular dishes. In attendance this year are Nest, Brisbane newcomers Salt Meats Cheese and barbeque joint Ribs and Burgers, with McWilliams acting as wine partner. The precinct is also presenting a series of ticketed celebrity chef lunches; Adam Laiw, Matt Moran, George Calombaris, Miguel Maestre and Luke Nguyen will all make an appearance. Make Some Cocktails With West Winds Gin
Part of the Riedel Drinks Lab, these Spiegelau cocktail classes will run you through some of the finer points of mixology before you get to serve up your creations in Riedel’s fancy pants Perfect Serve glassware. Leading the classes is West Winds Gin’s Mitch Keane, who’ll be teaching punters how to stir a salted caramel Espresso Martini and a Negroni spider. You even get a four pack of Old Fashioned tumblers to take home. Tickets are $60.
Taste of Korea, Hansik
Korean food is everywhere in Brisbane right now, so it’s about time you got to make some yourself. The Korean Food Foundation is bringing in Korean chef CH Shin to show you how. The two dishes you’ll learn to put together are a pickled thistle (gondeure jangajji) pastry garnished with beef tartare (yukhoe), and soy-sauce-braised chicken (jjimdak) in a fried croquette (kromesky) with neungi mushroom. This one’s free so don’t be late.
