What if you could celebrate like it’s Oktoberfest all year round? That’s the idea behind Munich Brauhaus, a two-level beer hall from the Rockpool Dining Group that has opened in South Bank.
“[Munich Brauhaus] is a really traditional Bavarian experience,” says Rockpool Dining Group’s CEO Thomas Pash. “It’s like going to Oktoberfest, but now you can do it every day.”
Munich Brauhaus Brisbane is the third venue since the original opened in The Rocks in Sydney in 1976. Despite its huge success (Pash calls it “a monster for the group”), it was almost 40 years before a second venue opened in Melbourne. Pash says the difficult part about opening Munich Brauhaus locations is finding big enough spaces.
“They’re big venues and it’s not easy to find sites that are 800 to 1000 seats,” Pash says. “At South Bank we chased that location for a long time. It’s been three-to-four years in the making.”
Located in the heritage-listed Allgas Building, the 900-seat venue features a main dining hall and beer garden downstairs, and two large private function rooms upstairs. Pash says the design and fit-out stage took longer than planned – two-and-a-half years in total – but he’s happy with the end product.
“It’s a heritage-listed building and that’s why the build took longer than expected,” Pash says. “We really wanted to make sure we kept some of the amazing features of the building and let the heritage shine through.”
Techne Architects have used the pre-existing characteristics of the building, like the exposed brickwork and beams, and added picnic-style timber tables, wooden logs, greenery, and touches of blue to create what Pash reckons is the ultimate German beer hall.
Rockpool Dining Group’s head of culinary, Neil Perry, has worked on the food menu, which features a range of schnitzels, sausages and its signature crispy pork knuckle with creamy mash, sauerkraut and bier jus.
Beer is obviously a major focus with 36 taps on offer. A large number are German-style beers made by Rockpool Dining Group’s Urban Craft Brewing Co, but there’s also a selection of German-made ambers too.
Queensland’s Bavarian blitz likely won’t end there. Pash says he would like to open six-to-eight more Bavarian Bier Cafes (another Rockpool Dining Group-owned restaurant chain) in Queensland in the next 12 months.
