For more than six years, Craft Wine Store in Red Hill has built a reputation for stocking wines and beers that can’t be found elsewhere. Now there’s good news for south-siders because Craft has opened a second store in Coorparoo.

“We get a lot of [south-siders] coming to our Red Hill store,” says Tony Harper, who co-owns Craft with his wife Tanya. “I think we’ll have a small instant audience at Craft Coorparoo, and hopefully our reputation will continue to grow.”

The Harpers took over a building that was once a bank, and designed the fit-out themselves. The store has shelves along both sides of the rectangular room, and a large coldroom in the middle. A timber table will be used for wine and beer tastings on Friday and Saturday afternoons.

The store’s range includes Australian and international wines, as well as local, national and international beers and spirits. With four other bottle shops in close proximity, the Harpers knew their offering had to be different.

“You [tend to] see the same wines and beers in most bottle shops because they buy from major wholesalers,” Tony says. “We like to buy directly from the wineries and breweries.”

There aren’t many notable differences between the two Craft stores, except there’s a car park out the back of the Coorparoo store. The Harpers are now regularly setting up umbrellas there and bringing in food trucks, hosting gin and wine tasting events.

As for the old bank vault, it’s still a few weeks away from turning into a fully temperature-controlled storage room for Craft’s best bottles of wine.
