E’cco Bistro’s Philip Johnson and Gert Pretorius are joining forces with superstar chef Josh Lopez for a special one-off dinner at their iconic Newstead restaurant.

The event will involve a five-course menu, with three courses presented by Lopez and two by Johnson and Pretorius. Lopez is known for the imagination and artistry he puts into his dishes and the dinner is intended to present a story along with every course. As is typical of the ex-GOMA chef, local, native and hard to find ingredients will feature prominently, including camel’s milk, quandong, saltbush, monstera and lucerne.

The meal will include an amuse-bouche produced together by the chefs, and an optional pairing of wines.

“This collaboration has been 10 years in the making,” Johnson said in a statement, “having often talked about cooking together, but never managing to make it happen.”

“Philip and I first met at the 2008 Good Food Awards and right from our first meeting I have considered him a mentor,” Lopez said. “This dinner will mark our first time together in the kitchen and I’m excited to create art inside E’cco’s new elegant space.”

The dinner will be Lopez’s first high-profile appearance since the celebrated chef’s shock departure from new Emporium Hotel and Opal project in South Brisbane.
