It’s only a month since Doughnut Time sent a line of people snaking around the King George Square bus station, after celebrating the opening of a new stall with an almighty thousand-doughnut giveaway.

This Monday, they’re doing it again. Local entrepreneur Damian Griffiths’ immensely popular doughnut operation is setting up in the CBD and giving away 300 doughnuts.

And not just any old doughnut. In deference to the United States’ July 4 holiday, a special edition ‘Oh My Stars & Stripes’ doughnut has been created, and will be on sale from 10am until 7pm — or, more likely, until they sell out, free or not.

Invented especially for Good Food Month, which runs throughout July, the doughnut is a combination of custom-cut star sprinkles, Hershey bars and salted pretzels, atop a maple glaze. “Myself, our marketing director, Laura Loubet, and our pastry chef, Kylie Simpson, came up with the flavour,” says Doughnut Time creative director, Adam Hunter. “It’s exclusive to ‘Barbara’, our doughnut van, which we’re parking in the Wintergarden in the city.”

It’s the latest power move from Doughnut Time, Brisbane’s little doughnut shop that could having recently made inroads into the southern states. There are now 21 outlets around Australia, with two more planned for Brisbane in the coming months.
