Since 2012, Red Hill’s Craft Wine Store has been selling and showcasing specialty beer and wine. Soon, customers from Brisbane’s south will no longer have to cross the river to visit – owner Tony Harper (perhaps better known as a prominent food reviewer) and his wife Tanya are opening a second store in Coorparoo.
“We’ve been talking about opening a second store for three years,” Tony says. “This spot came up and we grabbed it.”
Scheduled to open in early August, the Harpers have taken over a two-level tenancy that was once a bank. The space’s rectangular shape is very different to the freeform layout of the Red Hill store. Tony reckons this will prove a challenge for the fit-out.
“With Craft Red Hill I wanted to make it feel like an old-school bookshop where you can explore and spend a long time finding things,” he says. “The challenge with Craft Coorparoo will be converting a long rectangle into something that feels like that.”
Downstairs, the bank’s vault still remains. The Harpers plan to turn it into a temperature-controlled room where he will store all his best bottles of wine.
The range of Australian and international wines, as well as local, national and international beers, will initially be in step with the Red Hill store. But Tony says the offering will be fine-tuned once they begin to engage with locals.
A lack of space at the Red Hill store made it difficult to host large events. Harper plans to utilise the car park at the back of the Coorparoo store to set up umbrellas, get some food trucks in and host wine events or gin weekends.
Craft Wine Store Coorparoo will open at 260 Old Cleveland Road in early August.
