We all start the year differently. Some move slowly with sleep-ins and a litany of little treats; others go hard and fast, yelling “New year, new me”, hoping that January’s resolutions become February’s habits. The Anyday Group has started the year with a proverbial foot on the gas.

It’s only fitting. Even the most casual observer could tell you that the local food scene has kicked into overdrive.

“It is incredible to see Brisbane’s food scene thrive and we are so grateful to be part of it,” Anyday’s director Tyron Simon tells Broadsheet. “We love this city and really, we are Brisbane people operating restaurants for Brisbane people.”

Simon and the team have a slate of developments ahead of them: transforming Agnes Bakery into a new venue named Idle; opening Golden Avenue, a new Middle Eastern eatery; and a brand new precinct at 169 Mary Street.

The first cab off the rank is Idle, a new iteration of the much-loved Agnes Bakery. The impetus behind the re-brand is to reshape the bakery to offer a full cafe experience with cooked-to-order dishes and salads joining the cafe’s signature baked goods. “Our classic pastries and breads will stay,” Anyday director Ben Williamson tells Broadsheet. “Opening Idle is allowing us to really expand in other areas, particularly in savoury options.”

Also staying on board is the venue’s full team, which will work at Agnes Bakery until its close and then move to Idle.

In the second quarter of the year, the team will open Golden Avenue on Edward Street in the CBD. Golden Avenue will draw on the Middle Eastern cuisine experience of director Ben Williamson and executive chef Adam Wolfers (ex-Gerard’s Bistro). Expect a menu of hot and cold meze, seafood and flatbread (which will hopefully echo the success of Wolfers’s Flying Colours dish). The interior promises lush terraces and greenery.

The most mysterious new development is at 169 Mary Street in the CBD within the heritage-listed Coal Board Building. Details are scarce at the moment, but they tease the space will include two restaurants and a cocktail bar.
