Brisbane has a thing for burgers. Miel Container, Red Hook, Miss Kay’s and Ben's Burgers have the CBD and Valley covered, Getta Burger is dominating the outer suburbs, and upstarts such as Hello Harry and 5 Boroughs have reinvigorated forgotten food precincts. All are capitalising on the popularity of the bun-and-patty combo.

Brooklyn Depot (Gold Coast, Sydney) is the latest to cash in on the boom. Three weeks ago it opened its second Queensland restaurant on South Brisbane’s bustling Grey Street.

“Queensland is such a great state for us, the way that people enjoy themselves here is very unique. They know how to have a good time,” Brooklyn Depot’s regional general manager, Jonah Roberman, says. “And this location is amazing.”

Occupying a space previously home to South Side Diner, Brooklyn Depot references its New York borough namesake.

From the street it’s a fetching kaleidoscope of neon and moodily lit corners. Booths and long benches capture the spirit of the classic New York diner, a clutch of street and subway signs bolster the experience without being cliched. Bi-fold windows mean the space flows seamlessly from one area to the next, a feature that should come into its own in summer.

Burgers range from the Classic (grass-fed beef, American cheese, oak-leaf lettuce, tomato, Depot special sauce), through to the more unique Fuhgeddaboudit! (beef, beef chilli, American cheese, onion rings, chilli relish), which comes with a syringe of hot sauce. There are also shared plates (mac’n’cheese, charred corn), sides of chicken wings, fries, salsa, onion rings and slaw, salads and coma-inducing desserts (Do-My-Nut sundae, double-waffle ice-cream sandwich).

There’s a small selection of local and American beers, wines, spirits and hand-spun milkshakes. Cocktails are the focus, though. Take the Cavill-Tini: vodka, peach liqueur, apple juice, fresh passion fruit, lime, watermelon and fairy floss.

Delivery is available for West End, Highgate Hill, South Brisbane and Dutton Park. It also does takeaway.
