Cardamom scrolls, sourdough loaves, rich chocolate cakes and treats from country bakeries that are worth a detour.

There are very few situations which cannot be improved by a trip to a bakery. Starting your day is better with a thick slice of sourdough, the 3pm slump can be softened with a sweet treat and every dinner is better with a bit of dessert.

There are great bakeries across Queensland, but these are the ones our favourite chefs frequent.

Benny Lam

Jocelyn’s Provisions. Its chocolate roulade is unbeatable. It’s made of fluffy cream, fresh raspberries, soft chocolate sponge, finished with icing sugar. It’s gluten-friendly too, which is a bonus.”

Alana Lowes

Bella & Tortie is the spot. It’s the place you dream about all week, waiting for it to open for two days on the weekend. It’s hands down the best place to pick up some baked goodies. Get there early though, otherwise you might just miss out on perfection in the form of tarts, canelés, cookies and slices of cake. Owner and pastry chef Suzi [Unwin] is the flavour whisperer behind combos like espresso caramel pecan banoffee tart. Need I say more?”

Louis Tikaram

Christian Jacques bakery in Kangaroo Point. When I first moved to Brisbane in 2019, we lived right down the street – it has been my favourite ever since.”

Oscar Holgado

“Our bakers [at Kin Kin Hotel] – Richard and Kirsty Mundt (formerly of Agnes Bakery) – make the most delicious pastries, bread and cakes that we serve at the hotel and to staying guests at breakfast offering. And let’s just say that very soon people won’t have to drive all the way to Kin Kin to sample them.”

Meek Brikshavana

Mountain River Patisserie in Runcorn because everything is so good.”

Jamie Fleming

“It’s pretty hard to discuss Sunshine Coast hospitality, in particular the hinterland, without mentioning Kenilworth Bakery. The [team] is an absolute powerhouse and I have so much respect. Without doubt my kids’ favourite part of any trip: doughnuts and pies. Job done.”

Jason Barratt

“The dark chocolate and wattleseed cookie from Agnes Bakery. I grab one any time I’m near James Street.” [Editor’s note: the team has kept this on the menu at Idle, Agnes Bakery’s new incarnation.]

Erik Martinez

Christian Jacques. Their pastries and bread display incredible technique and attention to detail.”

Dario Manca

C’est du Gateau in South Brisbane. The owner, Sebastian, is a master of baking – and a good friend of mine. His croissants are an absolute must-try.”

Leaham Claydon and Jianne Jeong

Mountain River Patisserie in Runcorn. Technically flawless desserts with the most inspiring couple at the helm.”

Phil Marchant

“Has to be Sprout; give me one of those cardamom scrolls any day.”
